The heat is on in Windsor - Essex! And as we all know... cooling our homes account for a significant portion of our hydro costs.
Here are a few tips to help reduce your summertime energy costs:
- Clean your furnace filter - dirty filters can restrict air flow causing your cooling system to run longer and less efficiently
- If you home has an air exchange, clean the main filter once yearly and the other filters every 3 months
- Use portable fans to move the cooled air throughout your home
- Use a programmable thermostat to keep the home warmer while you’re out and cooler while you’re home
- If you’re not home during the day, close all blinds and drapes to help keep your home cool
Reduce humidity by turning on exhaust fans when necessary
- Use a microwave or BBQ to cook rather than heat producing ovens or stove-tops
- Run appliances during non-peak hours
- Check that the cooled air coming from your air conditioning vents is not obstructed by furniture or draperies
- Make it a habit to always turn off lights when not in use as well as heat generating electronic devices such as game systems, computers and laptops
- If your air conditioner is old, consider purchasing an energy-efficient model
We hope these tips help keep you cool and saving money during these hot summer months. Enjoy the summer!
