Road trip anyone?
Are you planning on a summer road trip? There's so much to see and do in our area of southwestern Ontario. Exploring further? Lucky you! Here is our road trip checklist to help you make the most of your getaway.
- Schedule a thorough mechanical inspection – Knowing that your brakes, tires, electrical system, cooling system, lights, fluid levels and windshield wipers are all in great shape will give you peace of mind knowing your vehicle is safe and running well.
- Spare tire – A flat tire can happen at any time and you don’t want your trip delayed with the hassle of a flat. Check the air pressure on the spare and that you have all the tools to change a tire in case of a flat.
- Clean your car – Making certain that your vehicle is clean and organized will help reduce stress while on the road. Take a few minutes to clean the haze off your headlights to improve your visibility.
- A tech challenge – Even with a GPS, you may encounter areas on your trip with no cell signals. Print up maps from the web or use a traditional paper map.
- Commit to distraction-free driving – Delegate a passenger to help keep other passengers entertained, check text messages, work the radio and take care of map or GPS navigation.
- The little details – Check that your insurance card is up to date, you have a copy of the owner’s manual and vehicle registration are easily accessible.
- Summer toys? Are you pulling a camper, boat or bringing ATVs on your road trip? Be sure these toys are properly insured and secured to your vehicle.

- Don’t be a victim – During stops, always have the windows up, doors locked and valuables out of sight.
- Renting a car for your travels? Learn if you really need the extra insurance offered by rental companies.
- Taking a pet? Never leave your pet in a vehicle during the summer. Look for pet-friendly outdoor restaurants in advance of your trip and be sure your pets have access to fresh water while travelling.
- Expect the unexpected – Know before leaving that there might be delays due to construction, accidents or heavy traffic. Give yourself a lot of time and pack your patience! Enjoy the journey as well as the destination!
