Protect Your Family, Guests and Home This Winter
Canadians experience unique challenges when it comes to protecting their homes, family and guests, particularly during the winter months.

Here are some tips for you:

  • Unattended cooking, particularly during the holiday season, is the primary cause of house fires in Canada, particularly during the holiday season. Commit to paying close attention when cooking, and have a fire extinguisher and baking soda within reach.
  • A slip and fall on ice or snow could be disastrous, and you may be deemed liable if you don’t provide a reasonable standard of care. If you are a tenant, this liability may be shared with your landlord. Thoroughly remove all ice and snow and make sure your outside areas are well-lit to ensure your family and guests are safe.
  • More than 20,000 children each year are taken to hospital each year with injuries that occur in the home. If you have or are inviting young children into your home, be aware of potential hazards, such as falls, burns, poisoning and choking. The likelihood of an injury to a child increases when parents are distracted, particularly during the holidays when entertaining or preparing food.
  • Be aware of and limit your and your guests’ alcohol consumption. Offer non-alcohol options and a wide variety of food when possible. Alcohol is an aggravating factor in accidents in the home, especially during the holidays.
  • Be confident that your home is safe from electrical fires by not overloading power outlets and only using approved heating devices correctly.
  • Keep candles, matches and lighters away from small, curious hands.
  • Move items out of high-traffic areas where there’s a chance for injury or damage. Also consider packing away any valuables, jewellery and cash.

Stay safe and enjoy the holidays and winter!
